Bloomsday Releases Statement Following Boston

Bloomsday Releases Statement Following Boston

In wake of the tragedy that struck Boston Marathon runners yesterday, Lilac Bloomsday organizers have released the following statement regarding race safety for this year's Bloomsday run:

We at Bloomsday are heartbroken about the events at the Boston Marathon, and we extend our deepest sympathies to the victims and their families. We are saddened that a wonderful celebration of health and fitness ended in tragedy.

Since our own event will take place in a few weeks, we understand that the Greater Spokane community and our visitors may have concerns. Safety at Bloomsday has always been our highest priority, and we will continue to work with the Spokane Police Department, the Spokane County Sheriff and federal agencies to plan for the wide variety of contingencies that might affect Bloomsday, as we have for many years. As we review these systems, we will make whatever changes are deemed advisable to ensure a safe and enjoyable experience for all our participants and spectators.

Spokane Stands With Boston

Spokane Stands With Boston

From sea to shining sea, Americans stood by Boston and those injured in the Boston Marathon Bombings on Monday night.  The attack brought back instant memories of the September 11th terror attacks of 2001.

America is a much different place than it was 12 years ago.  Today as the events in Boston unfolded, people turned to social media to not only find out what was happening, but to give their opinion as to what was going on.

“Terrible, but the world needs to expect terrorist acts, during world events, and national events, Satan’s working hard now a days!” wrote Janette Smith on the KXLY4 News Facebook fan page.

“Oh my goodness there’s so much blood. How horrid.” wrote Dawn Blasberg.

The images on television and streaming across the internet did indeed show a lot of blood on the street and sidewalks.  The images were unlike anything we’ve seen in recent years.  The images of hate and anger came at America in record speed.

“IF this is a terrorist attack, how could someone be SO heartless as to do something like this to innocent people!” wrote Bowtie Bob Fryer on the KXLY Facebook page.

Three more districts are hoping to join the program including Mead.

The program is designed to prepare students for work in the restaurant industry and offers hands on experience. Students receive training that includes customer relations, food preparation and safety, nutrition and how to run a business.

Local Stars Serve Dinner to Benefit Homeless

Local Stars Serve Dinner to Benefit Homeless

Sports stars and local T.V. personalities will be serving dinner at the HuHot Mongolian Grill tonight to support Blessings Under the Bridge.

Jessica Kovac and her husband Mike started serving brown bag meals to the area's homeless in 2007. Since then it has grown into a weekly meal service and non-profit. Their brown bags include sandwiches and home made baked goods, as well fruit and toiletries. Each recipient is offered a bottle of water and coffee or cocoa.

“Blessings Under the Bridge has just boomed so much,” says Kovac, adding that she and her husband never expected their weekly ministry to become a non-profit. BUTB estimates that it takes only $12.00 to provide brown bags for ten homeless.

Project Playhouse Benefits Local Community Centers

Project Playhouse Benefits Local Community Centers

What kid wouldn't want to play in their very own firehouse? Or perhaps hang out with the wizards and elves of Middle Earth from their hobbit house? Well, some very lucky families will get to do just that after visiting the Project Playhouse auction this weekend.

Last year the parks board cut funding for the West Central Community Center's recreational programs. This cut mainly affected the center's before and after school youth programs. Kim Ferraro, the Executive Director, had the idea for Project Playhouse after seeing a similar fundraiser in Montana.

West Central has teamed up with the Northeast Youth Center and Peaceful Valley Community Center to put on the auction. The Home Builders Association, Avista and other local businesses are sponsoring the event and have built the the themed playhouses. Spokane City Council members Steve Salvatori, Mike Fagan, and Mike Allen were also involved in setting up the project.
